Seeing the World Through Green-Colored Glasses: My Interview with Ed Begley Jr. (PDF)
The Huffington Post
This image of the blond bespectacled actor on his bike is something of a childhood memory for me. I grew up within a mile of Ed Begley Jr. in Los Angeles, and I still get warm fuzzies thinking about how he and I once shared a Studio City zip code. (The fact that Jack Nickolson and Tiffani Amber Thiessen also lived nearby didn't seem to interest this National Geographic reading, mountain-hiking kid who loved to compost.) When I had the opportunity to catch up with the Hollywood hero last month at the Go Green Expo in New York, I didn't hesitate to say hello.

It was March 2009, and Wenger, a consultant for a new solar-installation company, was manning a booth at the Go Green Expo at the Convention Center. A stranger approached.
The visitor complimented Wenger's fledgling Aztec Solar Power L.L.C. and expressed an interest in getting into the business.

New Products for Eco Friendly Living: It's Not Easy Being Green (Yet)
Shannon and I attended the recent Go Green Expo in Manhattan (with discounted tickets, of course – thanks Groupon!) to investigate the connection between eco friendly living and the Metro Cheapo lifestyle. Wandering through the numerous product displays and picking up swag from green businesses, several items caught my eye:
Vapur 16 oz. foldable water bottles ($8.95) are made of BPA-free flexible plastic that stand up when full and roll up when empty, saving space in your purse or reusable tote bag. Water bottles were a big presence at the Go Green Expo, with most made of stainless steel and costing more than $15. Vapur’s bottles come with a sport spout and cap as well as a D-ring so it can be attached to your bag or belt loop – a great idea for hikers and ultra-light backpackers.

It’s just a small little toothbrush, no big deal. That’s probably what most of us say to ourselves as we chuck 3 month old dental devices with splayed-out bristles and two-toned, ergonomically correct handles into the garbage can in front of us. Waiting in the wings is always a shiny, colorful and spectacularly new-and-improved version, beckoning us to give plaque and tartar the boot with minimal effort. Ohhh, and who can dispute the fact that scrubbing your choppers with a newly unveiled dental stick is quite possibly one of the greatest “little” pleasures in life (aside from finding a surprise stash of money in a coat pocket or scoring a free organic burrito coupon)?

About.com
Consider this as just another attempt by a celebrity to cash-in on the environment, or look beyond her name and parental connection to one of young Hollywood's most notorious "hot messes", and you might find that Dina Lohan has branded a respectable Eco-friendly dental hygiene product.
According to a press release, Lohan introduced "The Lohan Green Toothbrush" at the Go Green Expo that was held in New York City March 19 - 21, 2010. What makes this toothbrush Eco-friendly? Apparently there is no need to use water with this brush, which will hopefully help the average consumer reduce the amount of water used during your typical brushing session.
Here is a quote from the press release that might put things prescriptive:
"In 2006 the US EPA estimated that the average citizen wasted 2 gallons of H2O daily as part of brushing ones teeth and oral hygiene. Today that might amount to 600 million gallons daily! Over 2 billion people in the world don't have access to sanitary water. The Lohan Freedom Brush will provide a healthy alternative as well as contribute to the well being of others in which water conservation is mandatory."

I am sure by this point that all of you are all a bit tired of hearing about trade shows and expos. Believe me, my feet are tired of attending them….but, we do want to share some deets with you on the Go Green Expo we just attended in NYC this past weekend.
Here are a few highlights:
Did you know there was a waterless toothbrush? We didn’t either until Lindsey Lohan’s mom was showcasing one. It’s called Aquafree…we didn’t realize that Dina was so eco!
We also learned about a great new product called Schrapps. It is fabric gift wrap that comes in numerous sizes. You eliminate tons of trash and they are reusable. Great for large families who continually share gifts amongst one another. Will save you tons of cash! Frankly, I also love to put them in my hair and use as a headband, and Lauren ties them to her luggage so her black suitcase is distinguishable at baggage claim!

The 2010 Go Green Expo hit New York City’s Pier 92 (a much less oppressive locale than last year, the Midtown Hilton) this weekend and it had truly fierce competition: stunning and unusual 75 degree weather. Still, on a drop-dead gorgeous Saturday afternoon when every single New Yorker seemed to simultaneously emerge from hibernation and head outdoors, Go Green had a decent turnout. The expo was filled with the usual suspects: recycled toilet paper giveaways, elephant poop stationery, açai berry juice samples, and non other than Mr. Eco himself, Ed Begley Jr. (along with a host of other great speakers like actor/Bicycle for a Day founder Matthew Modine, author Mindy Pennybacker, and Natural Home editor Robyn Griggs Lawrence).

Regarding Shift.com
I just returned from a business trip to New York, where we met with all sorts of amazing folks and had a generally productive week, all in the midst of the first Spring-like week in the big apple. What great timing!
Among the things Boon and I did was to attend the Go Green Expo. I always enjoy seeing a nice showcase of businesses at events like that: from smaller companies like Jao (the “portable sink” hand cleanser), Snack Taxi and Forever Verdant (whose custom bamboo and paperstone recycling / composting island is now a recurring dream theme for me) to larger companies like Klean Kanteen (love the beer carrier they’ve developed so consumers can support local breweries without all the waste!), RecycleTech and Xerox (solid ink color printers, which eliminate all the plastic cartridges). While I think the event has lots of room to grow, it’s inspiring to have some face-to-face time with all of these companies, and to be able to touch and feel the products.

Today I went to the Go Green Expo at Pier 92 and learned about a lot of cool eco-friendly vendors. I was at the event for work purposes (I’m helping plan an eco-friendly fashion show/charity event in April and we were looking for sponsors), but it ended up being really fun. Here are some of the amazing vendors I came across:
Boho Magazine – a green fashion and lifestyle magazine printed on 100% recycled paper with recycled ink and packaging. Their current issue is all about Parisian style. It’s a splurge at $6 per issue at the newsstands, but isn’t reducing your carbon footprint worth the extra $2? bohomag.com.
Dropps – These pre-measured dissolvable “dropps” are filled with eco-friendly laundry detergent. As a college student who has to lug laundry up and down the stairs every weekend, these things are like lifesavers. Anyone else find carrying around a giant jug of detergent annoying? A pack of 20 costs $7. dropps.com.
Kelly Lane - Kelly Lane is an eco-friendly clothing line with a ton of stylish work-friendly options. kellylanedesign.com.
Little Kay Gardens - This company was showing one of my favorite products of the day: recycled flowering gift wrap. Wrap your gift in the pretty paper, then after it’s unwrapped it can be planted and will grow wildflowers within five days. littlekaygardens.com.

This past weekend the Go Green Expo rocked the Los Angeles Convention Center, bringing a diverse array of vendors, activists and entertainers downtown. A traveling tour of all things green, this was the Expo’s second year in Los Angeles. More than 300 booths, grouped into several sections, from “Green Jobs” to “Eco-Pet Expo,” offered options for every stripe of environmentalist. (More than 8,000 attended.) Activist and actor Ed Begley Jr. gave the keynote address, providing one of the highlights of the fair.
Begley gave a lecture on his personal environmental journey. He told a packed audience that his change of life came in 1970 after the first Earth Day. He began by making incremental lifestyle changes, such as riding a bike and building up to solar power only after he could afford it. He was adamant that whether or not you believe in global warming, going green “can reduce air pollution, lose dependence on foreign oil, and buy an insurance policy for climate change.”
His lovely wife Rachelle joined him onstage, after which he took questions. His poise and intelligence during the Q&A only added to the audience’s esteem of him and proved why he is such an important activist in the green movement. And like all true class-acts, he spent the next several hours signing books and speaking to fans at a nearby booth.

For some, saving a sick planet means going vegan, getting solar or plugging in an electric car.
For others at the Go Green Expo in Los Angeles this weekend, it meant fishnet bikinis.
"Our products are made of (recycled) nylon fishnets," said Caitlin Wood, a model for Eco-Panda, sporting a black-and-white nylon top. "I feel like a fish. I feel like swimming around all day.
"I feel that (the bikinis) are going to save the world."
Billed as the nation's premier green business and sustainable lifestyle show, the sixth annual Go Green Expo ended Sunday after drawing 8,000 visitors to the Los Angeles Convention Center.
The event featured more than 330 vendors boasting eco-friendly products from solar energy systems to electric bikes to natural foods for pets.
In addition to such eco-stars as Ed Begley Jr., the expo featured eco-futurist John Picard, eco-mom Mayim Bialik, formerly of "Blossom," and eco-son Paul Pelosi Jr., son of House Speaker Nancy.
The expo also lined up a first-ever green career job fair.
"There's a lot of money in green," said eco-producer Bradford Rand, founder of the Go Green Expo, which saw its largest show last weekend. "This is the only sector of our economy that has any chance of hyper growth in the next few years."

This weekend just past was the Go Green Expo at Lansdowne Park, so we ventured off the farm for an expotition along with Elizabeth, aka The Hilltop Fibreworker, aka co-owner of The Manotick Village Butcher, aka my new boss!
We went last year and found it to be very useful and came back with a pile of ideas of things we would like to be able to do. The biggest of these being solar panels and a rainwater harvesting system – neither of which we have achieved just yet, but they are still there on the list.
This year we were looking at it as a research expedition for the new butchers shop and potential local products. It was an interesting outing, we were a little disappointed to find that this year the food section seemed much smaller and there seemed to be an inordinate number of solar power vendors.
