In 2004, ACF created Project NEAT (Neighborhood Environmental Action Team), a program designed to educate Philadelphia residents about storm water best management practices. These projects include, tree plantings, concrete cuts, debris removals, rain barrel installation and community education. ACF has planted more than 1,000 trees, removed over 165 tons of debris, and reclaimed vacant land for community centers, recreation space and commercial centers.
Project NEAT also provides “green collar job” employment opportunities to residents with barriers to employment and ex-offenders. These community residents have been the frontline workforces for the hands-on environmental efforts conducted by ACF. ACF offers an eight-week jobs training and placement program providing community members access to skills required for the new green collar economy. ACF also offers a green job skills training and internship program for students.
